A giant stride toward green transportation was made this morning, when the Cleveland Metropolitan School District formally inaugurated the first 100 all-electric school buses in the state. The cars were sent out of the district’s East Side garage at 6 a.m., with students on their regular runs in them for the first time.
The project, funded by federal grants and state clean-energy initiatives to the tune of 45 million dollars, will replace the old diesel buses with zero-emission models that can cover 200 miles on a single charge. Charging stations were installed at five locations across the districts at night, allowing the buses to cover entire routes each day without breaks.

According to district officials, the switch will eliminate over 1.2 million pounds of carbon emissions per year, in addition to drastically improving air quality around schools and neighbourhoods. The send-off ceremony was attended by parents and other community leaders, who cheered as the bright yellow buses left. The buses will be fitted with the latest safety devices, including 360-degree cameras, automatic emergency braking, and real-time GPS tracking for parents. Every vehicle also has high-efficiency air filtration systems, which aim to safeguard students with asthma or respiratory problems.
Already in Progress: Plans of Statewide Expansion
According to the Ohio Governor’s Office, this pilot in Cleveland is the initial stage of a larger plan to electrify over 500 school buses in the state by 2030. Other similar projects are set to commence in Columbus and Cincinnati later this year. According to transportation leaders, the launch was a milestone in both education and climate.
Local motorists said they experienced less traffic congestion at bus stops because the engines were quieter. The school officials assured that the routes were on time in the morning and that nothing mechanical went wrong. Students boarding the buses called the new buses cool and future-ready.
With the passing of the yellow fleet down city streets, Ohio was one of the few states at the forefront of the shift to electric school transportation. Cleveland’s launch demonstrates that massive green transit can not only be made but is already running successfully in the Midwest.
