VANDALIA — The following is a calendar of events for the Vandalia Senior Center located at 21 Tionda Drive in Vandalia. Reach the Senior Center at 898-1232.

Summer History Series

A Summer History Series will be held on Mondays at 10 a.m. This is not a Sinclair class. These presentations are open to the public. You do not need to sign up if you are a member of the center.

June 5: Marla Fair who works at the Johnston Farm in Piqua will be here in costume to present the life of Mrs. Johnston who left Philadelphia for the Ohio frontier. Kristy Osting of StoryPoint of Troy is sponsoring this event and serving cookies.

June 12: Samuel Heider will tell his story of being born to Jewish parents in Poland. In 1941, their farm was taken by the Germans. Hear the story of Samuel’s family going to the ghetto, to a work camp, and the concentration camps. Listen to this story of survival and his life in America.

June 19: Kathy Hayes will present information on the Native American groups that lived East of the Mississippi River. Come learn about these diverse cultures.

June 26: Mark Davis will be presenting the story of Cuba from its past history to the present day.

Vandalia Fire Department Classes

Kim Hannahan of the Vandalia Fire Department will be offering four classes. There will be two classes in June and two in July. You can sign up for one, two, three, or all four. If you come to all four sessions, you will receive a Certificate of Senior Seasoned Adult Fire Academy or SAFA. Each session will last 1 1/2 to 2 hours with an intermission and snacks.

The first class will be Thursday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to noon. It will cover CPR (non-certification) and AED, kitchen fire safety, and using a fire extinguisher. The second class will be Thursday, June 29 from 10 a.m. to noon with a break. It will cover seasonal fire prevention, medication and poison safety, and fall prevention. These classes are open to all seniors whether you are a member or not.

We Honor Vets

Robin Sisk from Crossroads Hospice along with Ohioans Home Healthcare want to celebrate veterans with a lunch and small Veterans recognition ceremony. This lunch is for veterans and their spouses. It is open to the public. The deadline to sign up is Friday, June 16.
